About Coaching

RGSA coaches volunteer their time to help support the development of our players. Our coaches have the opportunity not only to develop players' skills, but to teach leadership, teamwork and good sportsmanship.

If you are the parent of a player, a former player, or a member of the local community interested in coaching, we encourage you to step forward and give it a try!

If you are new to coaching, RGSA is able to offer mentoring and support from our experienced coaches and from older players looking for an opportunity to help out.

Successful coaching is dependent on help from assistant coaches, team managers, and parents.  We encourage all parents and family members to volunteer.

Background Checks

RGSA's policy is to conduct a Criminal Record Check for all coaches, assistant coaches, managers, the RGSA Executive and any other member of the association that may be left in charge of minors.

Criminal Record Checks must be completed at least once every 3 years.

Volunteer Screening Forms must be completed every year.

Please register yourself on the RGSA Registration page. Through this process you will be directed to complete a Criminal Records Check online as well as a volunteer screening form.

Booking Practice Fields

We have limited space for practices so you must book your field/time to ensure you have somewhere to practice.

Practice fields must be booked by sending an e-mail to practicefields@rgsa.ca with preferred times and days.  Timeslots will be assigned on a recurring weekly basis, unless otherwise requested.

Practice fields are available from April 1st during the following time periods:

  • Saturdays after 2pm at McNair
  • Sundays all day at McNair
  • Anytime at Grauer

Practices may occur at McNair or Grauer ONLY.  London is scheduled for games during the week and tournaments on most weekends.

Coaching Clinics

Coaching clinics are offered throughout the Lower Mainland, and will usually include a clinic being hosted by RGSA.

More information about specific dates and times can be found on Softball BC's web-site: https://www.softball.bc.ca/content/upcoming-coaching-clinics

Additionally, RGSA may hold informal clinics to help coaches and team managers prepare for the upcoming season.  Please feel free to contact us to request a clinic.

Game Cancellations
Game Cancellations

Coaches should avoid cancelling games unless absolutely necessary using the following guidelines:

  • Weather - games should proceed as planned, unless there is heavy rain and/or standing water on the diamonds.  Games should proceed as scheduled if there is light rain or drizzle.
  • Player availability - games should proceed as planned when there is a minimum of 7 players available. Coaches are responsible for contacting the division coordinator and/or other coaches to request additional players, when needed.  If teams have less than 9 players available, players should be borrowed from the opposing team when fielding.
  • Other - diamonds have been closed for other reasons (e.g. by the city council).

Games must be cancelled at least 3 hours prior to the scheduled start time, and coaches must contact the following by 3pm:

  1. Coach of the opposing team
  2. (For home games only)
  • Umpire-in-Chief (UIC@RGSA.CA)
  • Concession manager (karen@rgsa.ca)
  • Field crew chief (TBA)
  • Field allocator (barry@rgsa.ca)

If you prefer to use a group text, contact your coordinator for appropriate numbers.
This will be available after April 1, 2022.

If games are cancelled, coaches should ensure make-up games are scheduled before the end of the season.
